Therapy By Design

I was initially drawn to The School Of Life by one product, the Emotional Barometer. More specifically the way it looks. While that might seem shallow it’s the trick to what makes this brand so wonderful.

With it’s amazing colors and quirky design, it's a fantastic and simple way to work on your emotional intelligence. There is plenty of research that supports the fact that your EQ is more important to your overall happiness than your IQ. Number of close friends is one of the main predictors of life satisfaction. Understanding your own emotions and those of the people around you makes those connections easier.

Self-help, growth and therapy tools are often things relegated to our cabinets, locked away and out of sight. I am not sure why that is. We all have deficits and blind spots. The people with shelves full of self-help and therapy books are the ones with enough self awareness to be able to identify those deficits and look for ways to overcome them.

Whether you need to cultivate a gratitude practice, gain more self confidence, or work on your marriage they have something that seriously and simply gets you on that path. And it’s designed in such a way that you want it out as a design object. You want it to be the first thing people see on your shelf or coffee table. It’s not just a random trinket you picked up to fill the space, it sends a signal that you are someone who takes personal improvement seriously. That you, and your relationships can be better tomorrow than they are today.

If you have a desire to get past the surface and dive deeper in a relationship, these beautifully designed prompts, tools and games will help you do so in a not intimidating way. You’ll find yourself and anyone in your space casually flipping through one of the decks of cards because they are beautiful and then having an epiphany and suddenly the whole night takes a different course and you’re on the road to one of those conversations you’ll always remember. Maybe with a friend, maybe with your significant other or maybe with yourself in your journal.
